Tricksters, Frauds, & Swindlers: Why We're Still Obsessed With Them
Every era has its villains.
Some steal money. Some steal trust. Some steal the entire Eiffel Tower.
However, across thousands of years, one thing has remained constant: people are endlessly fascinated by tricksters, swindlers, and fraudsters (myself included).
In my recent class presentation, I explored and researched why deceptive figures have appeared in every society and why we continue to study (and even fall for) them today. The deeper we looked, the more we realized that these characters reveal as much about us as they do about their crimes.
My main question going into the project was: Why do these scams even happen? Well, my research came back with four reasons that were certainly worth noting. Let's just say that people can be very manipulative.
The first force was inequality. With gaps in wealth and power (which certainly do exist), people become desperate. Scams become shortcuts to the top.
The second force is obvious. We have a society obsessed with success. Humanity glorifies wealth, so why would a scammer not present them with an opportunity for quick, abundant wealth?
As a society, we are vulnerable. With political instability or times of worry about the economy, we simply become vulnerable and want a way out.
The fourth force (the most manipulative of them all) is simply human psychology. Humans are wired to have belief, hope, and optimism. They WANT to believe that the "scam" is a miracle. Hope is a scammer's biggest prey.
This project really got me thinking- what does this say about society and about humanity?
Well, at the end of the day, tricksters hold up a mirror to society.
They reveal what we value (success, wealth, credibility) and what we fear: being fooled, being powerless, or being left out of opportunity.
Studying tricksters, frauds, and swindlers isn’t about glorifying crime.
It’s about understanding why deception works, why society keeps falling for it, and what these stories say about our values.
We are so focused on achieving wealth and glorifying power that we fall for these tricks again and again - because it's certainly not worth it to miss out on a potential opportunity for quick wealth, right?
Until it's a scam.
